BOTOX is the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure all over the world. It is used for both cosmetic and many other medical conditions. Botox has grown in use in recent times. Its popularity has increased among many people. It is commonly used non-surgical cosmetic.

Botox is a neurotoxin which is made from botulinum toxin that comes from bacterium found from natural environment called Clostridium botulinum, from which the name is derived from.

 It is most commonly injected into the muscle and the toxin acts on presynaptic nerve terminals. Thus it selectively weakens the musculature to achieve a pleasant cosmetic effect.

There are 2 types of toxins

1. Toxin B- which acts immediately within 6-8 hours.

2. Toxin A/ Botox- acts gradually from 3-4 days to 7 days after injection.

Botox injection is contraindicated in disorders of neuromuscular transmission. It should not be used in patients taking amino glycoside antibiotics. And also it should not be used in pregnant women, women attempting to become pregnant, and breastfeeding women. If the injection is not given well, patients can have headache, bruising, eyelid ptosis. If the procedure is not done properly, it can lead to unpleasing facial features.

The most common indication for Botox in the face is for the upper third of the face and followed by the other parts of the face. Most commonly it is used to treat the crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines, eyebrow lift and bunny lines. It can be used for the platysmal bands in the neck. It can also be used to treat the nasolabial folds and treat the gummy smiles and perioral lines and to treat the overactive mentalis/ chin region. It can also be used to treat the marionette lines. It can also be used to decrease secretion or sweating from the eccrine glands in the under arms, hands/ palms and soles.
